Number One Way to Eliminate Acne Stress

The First Step to Eliminate Stress

How do we really overcome stress?  What are the first steps that we need to take to make it more manageable?

I have been grappling with this question for the last week, especially since stress is the number one underlying cause of acne according to my quiz.

Over the years, as a Naturopathic Doctor, I have given great advice on how to handle stress – everything from creating more space for yourself, starting a meditation practice, cultivating self-love.  All that advice is solid, but is it really actionable?

Where do we start?  Meditation can feel defeating and the results take time to experience.  Sometimes we just need relief from the stress right now.

So, I have turned to the trusty Big Book – the bible of the 12-step program. 

I know this book well because my husband is part of AA and it has helped him heal in so many ways.  And the 12-Step Program has also helped me heal many parts of my life – I came from a family affected by alcoholism, I have been married to two alcoholics, and I am always struggling to overcome my co-dependant tendencies.

The 12-steps have saved the lives of many, many people suffering from all types of addictions – but the wisdom does not apply only to those of us with addictions. It can truly help anyone that is suffering – from anything.

So, let’s take a look at the first step of the 12-step program and see if it can help alleviate any uncontrollable stress that we may experience.

1. We admit that we are powerless over stress – and that our lives have become           unmanageable.

Just admitting that the stress in our lives is unmanageable and that we are powerless over it give a sense of relief.  Personally, I have always struggled with the word ‘powerless’ because it kind of admits defeat in an odd way.  I was brought up to believe that I could handle any challenge – growing up I was taught that independence, resilience and never giving up were essential character traits.

But sometimes, especially after trying everything and feeling like you just are not getting it – you have to admit that you cannot overcome something alone.  You need help.

We can’t do everything alone, we are not meant to do everything alone, and learning to accept our powerlessness is not admitting defeat – it is admitting our humanity.  And asking for help – which is what the next steps in the 12-Step program talk about is the only alternative.

So bottom line – if you feel as though you are having difficulty managing your stress, don’t try to figure it out on your own.  Ask for help, especially from a higher power – or a trusted person – to help you navigate through this!
