Why You Need To Do An Acne Elimination Diet
When you hear the words ‘elimination diet’ do you turn and run the other way? Do you think deprivation and having to give up your favourite foods? Before you completely discount an elimination diet, read on – it might be the very best tool to solve your acne for good and enjoy amazing health for the rest of your life.
Understanding Elimination Diets
As a Naturopathic Doctor, one of the tools that I have used extensively over the last 14 years is the Elimination Diet. Initially, elimination diets can seem daunting – giving up your favourite foods for a period of time can seem impossible and stressful. But the benefits are enormous, and when you start an elimination diet with the right mindset a whole lot of healing can happen. Here’s why:
- An elimination diet is not a long-term endeavor.
Most of my acne patients are on an elimination diet for 4-6 weeks. That amount of time is like a drop in the bucket when you consider that it is going to benefit you for your entire life.
- An elimination diet helps identify both food sensitivities AND food intolerances.
When it comes to figuring out which foods you need to eliminate from your diet, many doctors promote doing an IgG food test, which identifies foods that your body’s immune system reacts to. These are called food sensitivities. Although these tests can be helpful, they do not give the full picture – especially for acne patients.
Many acne patients also have food intolerances, which happens when food is not digested properly in the digestive tract. This can be due to dysbiosis, lack of enzymes and an inflamed gut. The IgG blood test does not always pick this up – they only identify foods that mount an immune reaction in your body.
The Elimination Diet identifies both food sensitivities and food intolerances and it is important to understand both for complete healing. The Elimination Diet is the gold standard test for food intolerance and food sensitivities because there is not one test can give you both measurements accurately.
- An elimination diet is empowering because it identifies which foods heal and which foods aggravate your skin and body.
The Elimination Diet is very beneficial because it is incredibly empowering to obtain the knowledge of what foods heal and aggravate your body. This information is going to help you throughout your entire life.
I like to call it food empowerment because it is truly empowering when you know what foods to avoid. Moreover, you are also made aware of the consequences of eating certain food that you might happen to love. And by being aware, you can decide if you can eat them occasionally and if they are worth it. You are empowered because you know what is causing your breakouts. You are not guessing.
- The elimination diet gives your body the time and space to heal.
If you continue to eat aggravating foods you can never fully get rid of inflammation and heal your body and acne. Think of it as putting fuel on a fire. If your inflamed body is the fire (and remember that acne is inflammation) even eating a small amount of aggravating foods is like adding fuel to a fire – your inflammation will be triggered. Instead, it is essential to remove all aggravating foods so that the inflammation in your body can heal – similar to keeping all fuel away from the fire so that the fire can quietly go out. This is the fastest and most effective way to heal the body.
AND – once you heal the body you can tolerate more foods. Many of the foods that currently trigger acne can become less inflammatory once you correctly heal the body. This is so worth the time and effort!
- Mindset is critical to succeeding on the elimination diet.
If you go into an elimination diet with the mindset of deprivation the experience will likely be frustrating and tedious. Instead, viewing the elimination diet as an amazing tool to empower you and heal your skin and body is inspiring and exciting. It is also a great opportunity to experience amazing new foods – and maybe even find some new favourites.
Also remembering that an elimination diet is not about deprivation – there is an abundance of foods that you are encouraged to eat throughout the program. Hunger is never on the agenda – and there are also plenty of healthy substitutes for the foods you miss the most!
An elimination diet is a short-term tool designed to heal your body, endow you with priceless knowledge that helps you design your perfect diet, and empowers you to understand how your body is working. There is not one other healing tool as powerful. And that is the mindset that brings success and healing.

If you can figure out one thing, figure out your diet. This is the single most important thing that you can do for your health and well-being, and it will benefit you for the rest of your life.
Doing an elimination diet is a critical part of the healing journey. Understanding what is helping us and what is hurting us so we can reach optimal health — clear skin, vibrant energy and absence of disease – is the greatest gift that we can give ourselves.
