Why Hormonal Acne Is Not About Hormones

When I came off the birth control pill my face exploded in hormonal acne.  Every month, my jawline and chin would rage with cystic acne right before my period.  It was painful, it was difficult to hide – and I felt as though it disfigured my entire face.  It also took nearly a month to completely go away – just in time for another outbreak.  It was beyond frustrating – it was traumatic.

My mission was to balance my hormones, and I became obsessed.  I thought about my estrogen, progesterone and androgen levels incessantly.  I did salivary tests, urine tests, took herbs and neutraceuticals.  I even took progesterone orally and tried all the androgen blockers you could think of.  I approached my patient care the same way.  But I had it all wrong.  Treating hormonal acne is not about treating hormones.

Finally, after becoming incredibly upset with my mediocre results, i realized I had to quit thinking about hormones so much, and change my approach.  Asking one question changed everything.

Instead of treating hormones, we need to ask what is causing the hormonal imbalance in the first place.

Root Causes Of Hormonal Imbalance

In order to heal hormonal acne, we need to dig deeper and address the root causes of the hormonal imbalance.  After working with thousands of patients for over 14 years,  I have discovered that there are 4 root causes that create inflammation and lead to hormonal imbalance.

Toxin overload.  Not only are most acne patients poor detoxifiers, but we also live in a toxic world.  This can easily lead to a body that is overburdened with toxins, which can lead to inflammation and hormonal imbalance.

Insulin dysregulation. Over 100 years ago, doctors coined the term ‘Diabetes of the Skin’ to describe acne because of the strong connection between acne and dysregulated blood sugar and insulin levels.  Imbalanced insulin levels can lead directly to a hormonal imbalance.

Unhealthy gut.  An unhealthy gut can often lead to skin issues.  The microbiome, which is a community of trillions of microbes that live in your gut and on your skin, is the link between the gut and the skin. When the microbiome is not imbalanced, this can create inflammation – including acne.  If you experience bloating, diarrhea, and/or constipation, healing your gut can be a key factor in healing your acne for good.

Poor Stress Management. Stress is a significant factor in acne.  When you are stressed, there are three different hormonal pathways that lead directly to acne. The message: relax (easier said than done, I know).

These four factors must be addressed to solve your acne permanently. To sum up the most important point  –if you are just addressing your hormonal acne at the hormonal level, you will never solve it for good.  It is very important to know and address the issues that contribute to hormonal imbalance.  When we solve these issues, we resolve inflammation in the body and hormones naturally balance themselves.
